Anxiety During Pregnancy

Image
Anxiety symptoms are relatively common during pregnancy but typically undiagnosed and undertreated.  A recent study of 2793 women observed that 9.5% of women meet criteria for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) at some point during their pregnancy.  The highest rates of GAD were observed in the first trimester (7%). Only 2% of women met criteria for GAD in the second trimester, and 3% in the third trimester. Cognitive-behavioral therapy  and relaxation techniques may be very useful for treating anxiety symptoms during pregnancy and may reduce the need for medication. https://theanxiety.clinic/anxiety-release-protocol-arp/

Addiction Therapy in Toronto

Image
Addiction is the constant need for and use of a substance or behaviour that feels out of your control. It becomes a habit and it involves building up tolerance (which is often experienced as always needing more to feel satisfied). In the case of substance abuse, there are well-defined physical symptoms upon withdrawal. Addiction is classically experienced as using substances such as drugs or alcohol, or using outlets such as gambling or pornography, to avoid distress or unbearable feelings of boredom, anxiety, agitation, or depression. Addiction affects both brain and body and seriously disrupts our efforts to live a satisfying, meaningful life. Addiction is a highly subjective experience. What addiction is like for you may not be exactly what it is like for someone else. When a psychotherapist works with you to help manage your addiction , the aim of the process for both of you will be to understand and contain the distress that causes the behaviour in the first place. https://thean

The Anxiety Clinic

Image
In 2016 I was diagnosed with tonsil cancer and was treated with a very aggressive 30 rounds of radiation to my head and neck plus chemotherapy. It’s almost 3 years later now and the good news is that it seems to have worked and there is little reason to be concerned about it returning at this point. (I f you want to learn more about my journey through recovery you can check out one of my earlier  blogs here ). The bad news is the radiation destroyed my salivary glands which have only partly returned, and all of my taste buds which, for the most part have regenerated, although I don’t have the extreme capacity to differentiate tastes as I used to. Regaining my sense of taste was not only relieving (I am a serious foodie and cook!) but it was both funny and challenging. Sometimes the taste buds magically appeared and rewired wrong – peanut butter could taste like vanilla, and other strange mix-ups! It was with great effort and intention that I worked on improving my taste and calibrati

How does Executive Coaching benefit from integrated psychotherapy? Traditional Executive Coaching , like all good coaching, is provided by coaches who have ‘been there, done that,’ and achieved success in the corporate management, executive, and C-Suite ranks.  The cornerstone to their success is primarily in helping you develop best strategies and implement those strategies in a corporate environment. Integrating the fundamentals of psychotherapy, that is understanding the psychology of how your mind and the minds of your colleagues work, brings a whole new level of possible change and success. Based on the science of psychology, this psycho-education integration helps you lean into and live into, new ways of being that can propel your management skills and success to new heights.  Being able to integrate a heightened level of self-reflection and intentional way of being, allows you to step beyond your own barriers and challenges to become a formidable team player and leader. https:

Psychotherapy for Depression

Image
Psychodynamic Therapy Psychodynamic therapy is based on the assumption that a person is depressed because of unresolved, generally unconscious conflicts, often stemming from childhood. The goal of this type of therapy is for the patient to understand and better cope with these feelings by talking about the experiences. Psychodynamic therapy is administered over a period of three to four months, although it can last longer, even years. https://theanxiety.clinic/depression/

Staying Safe Online

Image
WARNING! Staying Safe Online – It’s not just Social Media that Sells you Fake News There has been much discussion and research of late around how logarithms in social media can take note of what you click on and then teach the Artificial Intelligence (AI) behind the social media to feed you more of the same. AI creates a social media rabbit hole that only serves to reconfirm an original curiosity, which, at the time of your initial search, you may or may not have held as either truth or particularly relative. Beware the Man Behind the Curtain Perhaps you see a post talking about a protest or violence, and you may be simply concerned whether it is in your neighbourhood, so you click the angry icon and then on the post and comment. As you begin to read the article, perhaps it mentions something you remembered your friend saying, so you click through on that link. Maybe you share this post with your neighbour. Instantly the social media logarithms (much like “the Man Behind the Curtain”

Mental Illness Therapy

Psychological treatments can reduce the distress associated with symptoms and can even help reduce the symptoms themselves. Depending on the person, these therapies may take time (often months) to show benefits. There are many different psychological therapies used in the treatment of mental illness. Each person needs to find the therapy that works for them. Not all treatments are helpful for everyone. Some examples of psychological therapies include: cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)  – examines how a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour can get stuck in unhelpful patterns. The person and a therapist work together to develop new ways of thinking and acting. CBT usually includes tasks to perform outside the therapy sessions. CBT may be useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT)  – examines how a person’s relationships and interactions with others can affect their own

Couples Therapy in Toronto

Image
In Couples or Marriage Therapy , we meet with both partners to understand difficulties in the relationship, including communication, problem solving, warmth, affection, and satisfying intimacy.  Together, we work to understand those current and past systemic patterns of interaction which interfere with the relationship and we look at ways to positively influence communication and intimacy to create a new way of being together. In the process, partners agree on goals for the relationship which typically creates a more satisfying, respectful, supportive, loving and intimate relationship. Both individuals grow and expand as they move toward achieving their mutual goals. We meet patterns creating disconnection, and to heal attachment injuries and restore connection. https://theanxiety.clinic/

Therapeutic Coaching

It’s Been a Tough Day, or a Big Win. Do You REALLY deserve that drink? With the years of prohibition happily now long gone, we now live in a society that encourages alcohol use as a social lubricant. Social Media, advertisements, and even campaigns run by our government regulated bodies glamourize alcohol. A toast at New Years, a ‘fine wine’ paired with dinner, the bachelor and bachelorette parties, and drinking games…they are normal, and even fuel bragging rights and help define our social status. In Ontario Canada, the  Liquor Control Board of Ontario  (LCBO) releases a beautifully designed recipe book with accompanying alcoholic spirits for Christmas. Owning a vineyard is an aspiration of the rich and wealthy and social media fuels drinking into every segment of our lives – including motherhood. A recent product advertised on Facebook showed flasks disguised as baby bottles for the ‘mother-on-the go.’ Another showed a complete papoose with a life-like infant doll, a straw attached

Stress Counselling

Image
How does counselling help stress? Counselling for stress at work aims to identify the causes of an employee’s work-related stress. When conducted in a private and judgment-free environment, it can help the employee to understand the cause of the stress, and find steps to manage and reduce it. It’s common for people to experience stress at work. But it can affect everything from your mood to the way you treat friends, family or colleagues. Extended periods of stress can be a risk factor for other underlying issues, such as depression or anxiety. This is when it might be helpful to consider counselling for stress. As well as helping with identifying the causes of stress,  counselling can also help to understand the role that your thoughts play in increasing your stress level . https://theanxiety.clinic/
